Fidelity crypto department to increase by 25%

The Fidelity crypto division will have 500 staff members in total within the first three months of 2023, according to a spokesperson.

In sharp contrast to the recent squeezing out of crypto talent, $4.5 trillion asset management company Fidelity Investments is to employ another 100 individuals to support the firm's developing digital assets division. [Source: MoniTalks]

Vertu’s Luxury Web3 Phone Tops Out at $41,000

At an event in London today, smartphone manufacturer Vertu revealed its latest device, Metavertu—a “Web3 phone” that can run its own blockchain node and turn photos and videos into NFTs with a single click.

The device itself is unapologetically aimed at the higher end of the market. All models sport a ceramic frame and Vertu’s signature sapphire glass screen, powered by a Qualcomm SnapDragon 8 Gen 1 CPU. A 6.67in, 2400×1080 AMOLED display, three-lens camera array and a 4,600mAh battery round off the standard specs list.

The entry-level model comes with a carbon fiber finish, 12GB RAM and 512GB internal storage and a $3,600 price point. The top-of-the-line model, meanwhile, has 18GB RAM and 1TB storage, and comes wrapped in "Himalaya Alligator leather," 18K gold and diamonds. The price? A staggering $41,000. [Source: Decrypt]

Self-sovereignty in the creator economy and Web3 — Is there room for both?

On Oct. 28, NFT Steez, a biweekly Twitter Spaces hosted by Alyssa Expósito and Ray Salmond, met with Web3 content writer Julie Plavnik to discuss the importance of self-sovereignty while building a digital identity in Web3.

Plavnik referenced author Gavin Wood when describing Web3 and said that “communication” is a core tenant in the subsequent iteration of the internet. “Web3 is the communication of encrypted channels between decentralized identities,” Plavnik affirmed.

According to Plavnik, the emerging concept of Web3 placed a magnifying glass on user data and ownership, especially concerning the creator economy. Plavnik described the creator economy as a place with “no entry barriers or casting.”

During the show, Plavnik explored how users are coming around to the notion that they can potentially monetize their individuality in Web3, but she also questioned how they could maintain their self-sovereignty. [Source: Cointelegraph]

A new concentrated solar power system could cut energy costs to 5 cents per kWh

Concentrated solar power (CPS) has the potential to lower the cost of renewable energy and provide highly available dispatchable energy at any time of the day.

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the Department of Energy (DoE) are both working on the next generation of CPS facilities as part of the DoE's plans to reach an energy cost goal of 5 cents per kWh, a press statement reveals.

In the road to achieve this goal, U.S. government agency awarded NREL $2 million to develop a prototype for a system that can harness the great energy potential of molten salts while taming their corrosive properties. [Source: Interesting Engineering]

This is an old, recurring topic, as old as crypto itself. Inevitably, I get asked about it in every AMA session I do. It’s also a topic I think about often and have on more than one occasion, shared my views such as in this blog post from 2019. Three years on, my views remain pretty much the same but the added time has given me the opportunity to add new depth and dimension to my thinking about this important topic. In essence, I believe the first thing to understand is that decentralization is not binary, and not single-dimension. There are multiple aspects to decentralization. Every aspect is a gradient scale, not simply black-and-white. It is also important to remember that decentralization is a means to the goal, not the goal itself.
