Blockchain Education: dApps

Decentralized applications (dApps) are digital programs that operate on a blockchain or peer-to-peer (P2P) network, allowing for greater transparency and security. These programs can be used for a wide range of purposes, from gaming to finance to social media, and are often built on the Ethereum platform.

Unlike traditional web apps that are controlled by a single organization, dApps run on a decentralized network where no single authority has control. Decentralization has many advantages over centralized networks, the most significant of which is the lack of a third party, made possible by innovative smart contracts. For example, using an app like Venmo to send money incurs a fee to move funds to a bank account, and it can take days to arrive. In contrast, sending money over a decentralized app incurs little to no cost and is almost instantaneous, saving users both time and money. dApps are also invulnerable to attacks as there is no physical device to target, making them more secure and reducing downtime. The potential for dApps is limitless - they can be used for everything from self-executing financial contracts to multi-user games and social media platforms. They can even be integrated into web browsers as plugins, which can serve ads, track user behavior, and accept crypto donations.
