🎓Blockchain Origin: Merkle Trees

The Merkle Tree was conceptualized by Ralph Merkle of Stanford University in 1980 and is frequently used in peer-to-peer (P2P) networks to address computing and memory space needs. It would not be an exaggeration to argue that Merkle trees contributed significantly to the success of blockchain technology.

Why are Merkle Trees Important? Merkle trees arrange transactions efficiently, allowing an extensive amount of information to process quickly. This arrangement reduces the data and CPU processing used for verification.

In addition, Merkle trees create a tamper-proof system by organizing transaction data into a tree-like structure, where each level is created by hashing the previous level until a single root hash remains. This root hash efficiently verifies the integrity of the data, ensuring that any changes are easily detected.

What is a Merkle Tree?

The Merkle tree is a type of binary hash tree with 3 different nodes: leaf nodes, non-leaf nodes, and root nodes. Merkle trees aid in organizing, maintaining, and verifying transaction integrity in any decentralized ledger and can be found in both the Bitcoin and Ethereum chains.
