Permissioned & Permissionless Blockchains
You may have heard blockchains being described by the term permissioned or permissionless. Below you will find lists of what it means to be a permissioned blockchain versus a permissionless blockchain.
Access to the network and consensus process is restricted to a predefined group of participants
Only authorized users to have the right to read, write, or validate transactions
Ideal for enterprise use cases that require privacy, control, and regulation
Also known as private blockchains
Examples include Hyperledger Fabric, R3 Corda, and Quorum
Anyone can join the network, read, write, and validate transactions
There are no restrictions on who can participate in the consensus process
Ideal for public use cases that require transparency, censorship resistance, and inclusivity
Also known as public blockchains.
Examples include Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Dogecoin.
The four types of blockchains use either permissioned, permissionless, or a combination of both in their protocols. For example, Consortium Blockchains use permissioned blockchain elements, while Hybrid Blockchains use a combination of both permissioned and permissionless.
