Arizona Lawmakers Seek to Make Crypto a Tax-Exempt Property

Arizona State Senators Wendy Rogers, Sonny Borrelli, and Justine Wadsack have proposed a bill in the first session of the Arizona State Senate in 2023, that would give Arizona residents the opportunity to vote on amending the state's constitution with regards to property taxes for virtual currency. Specifically, the bill proposes that tokens that are not "a representation of the United States dollar or a foreign currency" would be tax-exempt if the measure passes the legislature and voters approve the measure in November 2024.

Currently, under Arizona's constitution, all federal, state, county, and municipal property are tax-exempt, as well as public debts, certain household goods and some "stocks of raw or finished materials, unassembled parts, works in process or finished products". According to the Arizona Secretary of State, there were over 4 million registered voters in the November 2022 general election, and the state leans slightly Republican.

The bill, SCR 1007, went through two readings on Jan. 19 and Jan. 23. Lawmakers in previous sessions have attempted to pass legislation related to crypto and taxes, such as a 2018 bill that would have allowed residents to submit tax payments in crypto, but the bill was vetoed by then-Governor Doug Ducey. Rogers also introduced a similar bill in the second Senate session of 2022.[Source: Cointelegraph]

According to three co-founders of blockchain gaming companies, the casual gaming market will continue to play a vital role in the adoption of blockchain games and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in the gaming industry. Casual gamers, who play games occasionally but not extensively, constitute the largest group of players in the gaming industry. Kieran Warwick, co-founder of the blockchain role-playing game Illuvium, emphasized the importance of casual gamers due to their large numbers. As of 2023, there are over 3 billion gamers worldwide, with an estimated 1.95 billion being casual gamers, according to data from Exploding Topics. [Source: Cointelegraph]
