U.S. Home-Loan Banks Lent Billions of Dollars to Crypto Banks
The U.S. Federal Home Loan Banks System (FHLB) is lending billions of dollars to two major crypto banks to counter a surge in withdrawals, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The FHLB, a consortium of 11 regional banks that provide funds to other banks, lent nearly $10 billion to Signature Bank in Q4 2022 and at least $3.6 billion to Silvergate. Bank of Thailand to Allow First Virtual Banks by 2025
The Bank of Thailand has announced plans to allow virtual banks to operate in the country for the first time, with applications set to be available in 2023. Financial firms will be able to provide services by 2025, as the central bank aims to increase competition and boost economic growth. The bank will issue three different licenses for interested companies by 2024, and regulations and supervision for virtual banks will be the same as traditional commercial banks.
