Blockchain Education: Ethereum Blockchain’s Shanghai Hard Fork
In March, Ethereum will undergo its first major upgrade since switching to a proof-of-stake system in September, also known as a "hard fork". Upon completion of the upcoming "Shanghai" upgrade, validators who help operate the network will finally be able to withdraw 16 million staked ETH.
The main focus of Shanghai is the implementation of Ethereum Improvement Proposal-4895, which will allow validators to access the staked ETH they have been using to secure the network. This change has been highly anticipated as it marks a significant step forward for the proof-of-stake blockchain.
Before the transition to proof-of-stake, Ethereum used a proof-of-work system and relied on miners to add blocks to the blockchain. In the switch to proof-of-stake, validators took over this role by staking 32 ETH. Each staked ETH acts as a ticket in a lottery, with more ETH increasing the chances of being selected to propose the next block of transactions and earn rewards.
The change to proof-of-stake in December 2020 marked the first step towards the "Merge," and validators have been staking ETH and earning rewards ever since. However, until now, they have been unable to access their staked ETH or rewards. With the implementation of EIP-4895, the full operation of the proof-of-stake blockchain will come to life, giving validators control over their funds and the ability to decide what to do with their rewards.
In addition to unlocking staked ETH, the Shanghai upgrade includes additional changes that will impact Ethereum app developers and users. The upgrade marks a significant moment for Ethereum and its community as the network becomes fully functional with the ability for validators to access their staked funds and make decisions about their rewards. Mattel Launches NFT Platform Via ‘Mattel Creations’
Hot Wheels NFTs have been a popular project on the WAX blockchain, but that is expected to change in early 2023 when Mattel Creations launches its own NFT support. The fourth series of Hot Wheels NFT releases is on the horizon and this move signals the company's continued interest in NFTs and bodes well for the future of blockchain collectibles. In the meantime, Mattel Creations, which offers a "toys as art" concept and digital goods, is already underway but currently without NFT support. Previously, Hot Wheels NFT packs, which include a voucher for a physical toy car and sell for $25, have sold out quickly. Mattel Creations is also the host of several culture-first collaborations that could also benefit from NFT engagement. [Source: Bitcoinist]
Crypto Exchanges Made up 84% of Job Cuts Last Month
January 2023 saw the second worst month for crypto layoffs, with as many as 2,806 people losing their jobs, according to a report by CoinGecko. The report also indicated that this year's total number of layoffs in the crypto industry could surpass the previous year's figure of almost 7,000 due to the impact of the bear market and difficult global economic conditions on company finances. Centralized crypto exchanges were responsible for the majority of job cuts, with 84% of all layoffs, caused by declining trading volumes and revenues.
Major crypto exchanges that announced cuts in personnel in January include Huobi, Coinbase, Blockchain.com, Crypto.com, and Luno. Some of these exchanges have already gone through rounds of layoffs, with Coinbase and Crypto.com having previously trimmed their workforce in June 2022. [Source: Decrypt.io]
Visa Is ‘Testing’ Stablecoin Payments on Ethereum
Visa is exploring the integration of blockchain-powered solutions into its services to modernize payments. The company believes that stablecoins and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) have a significant role to play in payments. Visa is testing payment and payouts on Ethereum using stablecoin USDC for large value settlements. A team at Visa has been evaluating various blockchains for security, scalability, interoperability, privacy, and use cases. The company is also exploring the option of auto payments through Ethereum wallets and recently released a proposal for setting up automatic payments without the need for banks or centralized entities. Token Monetization Innovation (TMI)
SafeMoon has released a new patent pending feature designed to improve the user experience on it's DEX (Decentralized Exchange - SafeMoon SWaP) labeling the feature TMI (Token Monetization Innovation).
TMI aims to improve transparency and transaction predictability by charging the exchange fees upfront in the native token and using smart contracts to ensure transparency in token liquidity pairings. It also aims to expand the availability of web3 and enable additional community partnerships with meaningful projects.
