Our Planet has passed 1TW of Solar Capacity
There are now enough solar panels installed throughout the world to generate 1 terawatt (TW) of electricity from the sun, according to the latest estimates, marking a major milestone for renewable energy adoption. This solar capacity is enough to meet the electricity demands of nearly every country in Europe combined, though distribution and storage limitations mean it is still only a small fraction of global energy supply.
The largest contributor to this capacity is China, who broke through – and blew past – 100GW in late 2016, or early 2017. The European Union hit 100GW in 2015, just before China. In the United States, 100GW was reached in the first quarter of 2021. These three regions represent more than half of the world’s installed solar capacity. According to the BP Statistical Review of World Energy 2021, the world generated 26,823 terawatt hours of electricity in 2020. 855 of those terawatt-hours – approximately 3.1% – was generated by the sun. 2021 was seen as a major milestone as Solar's growth was measured. The world saw an increase of Solar generation by approximately 23% compared to its previous benchmark.
India Surpassed 50GW of Installed Solar Capacity and They Aren't Stopping.
India's sustainable capacity stood at 109.9 GW as of the completion of March, with solar accounting for 53.4 GW (47%), while one more 72GW of solar is either in the pipeline or at the bidding phase, according to JMK Research.
Of the 72GW not set up already, 45GW are in the pipeline-- anticipated to be commissioned in the following 4 to five years-- with 27GW at the bidding phase where tenders have actually been provided yet auctions are not yet completed.
