Blockchain Education: Web3 vs. the Metaverse

Understanding the Next Generation of Internet Platforms

The Internet has transformed how we communicate, conduct business, and live! Aside from all the incredible changes the internet has brought, it presents various challenges, including fragmentation, content moderation, and lack of interoperability. To tackle these challenges, Web3 and the Metaverse have emerged as the next generation of internet platforms. So what is Web3, what is the Metaverse, what do they have in common, and how are they different? Web3

Web3 is the third generation of web technology that is open, decentralized, provides increased security, and automated platforms for developing applications and services. It utilizes blockchain technology and allows users to interact with decentralized applications (dApps) and smart contracts securely, providing a more reliable way to access and use web services. In a May 2022 article in the Harvard Business Review, the author shares their belief that Web3 will revolutionize the internet, creating new economies, introducing new classes of products and services, and providing more control to users over their data and online activities.

The Metaverse

The metaverse is a virtual universe of interconnected virtual worlds that can be accessed through the internet. One aspect of the metaverse can be described as a new frontier for online interaction, where virtual and physical worlds are blended through computer-generated avatars.

Metaverse technologies have been integrated into modern internet-enabled video games, virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality. The Metaverse is not a game, a piece of hardware, or an online experience but rather an entirely new set of technologies, applications, and financial opportunities. According to Demandingsage.com, the “Metaverse has 400 million monthly active users as of 2023.” (Ruby, D.)

Similarities between Web3 and the Metaverse:

  • Both are decentralized systems.

  • Both allow users to own and control their digital assets.

  • Both are designed to be interoperable with other platforms.

  • Both use modern web technology, distributed computing, and AI.

Differences between Web3 and the Metaverse:

  • Web3 is focused on building a decentralized web that addresses issues of data ownership and control, while the Metaverse is a virtual world that focuses on social connection and immersive experiences.

  • Web3 primarily utilizes Blockchain technology, while the Metaverse focuses on virtual reality and augmented reality technologies.

  • Web3 is designed to provide a more seamless and user-friendly experience, while the Metaverse is focused on providing a more immersive and interactive experience.

  • Web3 is built to support the creation and use of decentralized applications (dApps) across multiple networks, while the Metaverse is designed to create decentralized applications and virtual experiences that can be used across different platforms and networks.

  • The nature of the communities that drive Web3 and the Metaverse is different, with Web3 relying on developers, users, and other stakeholders to build and maintain the decentralized web, while the Metaverse relies on its community to guide the desired virtual experiences and applications, maintaining a general focus on social connection.

In general, Web3 is primarily focused on building a decentralized web that addresses issues of data ownership and control, while the Metaverse is focused on providing immersive and interactive virtual experiences that connect people across different platforms and networks. As these technologies continue to evolve, they will play an increasingly important role in shaping the future of the digital economy.
