DeFi Protocol Ankr Exploited for Over $5M
DeFi protocol Ankr, which called itself the first ‘node-as-a-service’ platform, has suffered a multi-million dollar exploit due to a bug in its code that allowed for unlimited minting of its token.
According to security research firm PeckShield, the code behind the Ankr contract allows any user to mint an unlimited amount of the protocol’s reward-bearing staking tokens without any sort of verification. This allowed the attacker to mint six quadrillion of the aBNBc token. [Source: CoinDesk]
Web3 Antivirus: Putting an End to the Crypto Scam Era
While Web3 is a landscape of endless opportunities, any prosperous field attracts its fair share of fraudsters. Smart contract and website forgery, malicious airdrops, phishing, compromised social media accounts and spamming are just a few of the dangers one might face. In Web3, it takes just one click to lose everything you own.
Alarmingly, more than $1.6 billion in crypto has gone missing in 2022 due to huge exploits in DeFi, far more than the heists of 2020 and 2021.
The Web3 Antivirus team decided that these situations shouldn’t have happened in the first place. On Dec. 1, 2022, it announced the launch of its top-notch solution aimed at keeping users’ assets safe.
Web3 Antivirus is a free open-source Chrome extension that empowers users to navigate and transact safely in Web3 with zero setup. It leverages both the capabilities of proprietary security audit frameworks and a base of millions of websites within blocklists and allowlists that it draws data from.
The tool currently works with Ethereum, while Binance and Solana support is on the way.

Italy to Impose 26% Capital Gains Tax on Crypto Profits
Italy is planning to tighten regulations on digital currencies in 2023 by expanding its tax laws to include cryptocurrency trading, according to budget documentation released on Dec. 1.
Included in its 2023 budget are plans to impose a 26% levy on profits larger than 2,000 euros ( $2,062) made on cryptocurrency trading, according to Bloomberg. Historically, digital currencies have had lower tax rates because they have been considered “foreign currency.”
If the proposed bill is signed into law, taxpayers will have the option to declare the value of their digital asset holdings as of Jan. 1 and pay a 14% tax. This is intended to incentivize Italians to declare their digital assets on their tax returns.
According to Tripe A data, 2.3% of the Italian population, which equates to about roughly 1.3 million people, own crypto assets. By July 2022, it was estimated that about 57% of crypto users were male, while 43% of users were female, with most of its users belonging to the 28–38 age group. [Source: CoinTelegraph]
